Board

We could alway use more working Board members. The tasks are not difficult, if they are distributed to many. The current 3 active Board members (Amy, Robert, and Carol) plus honorary ex-officio Board member Frankie, are too few. There is a possibility that we will be losing one after this season and without more working Board members PYB will have to go into hibernation or alternatively some sort of minimal production after this year, that is until we build up our core team again.

I had no time to make updates between being Mr. T and starting to pack the truck starting from intermission. The parts of the show and dancing which I did see were wonderful. Keep dancing and you will keep getting better and more wonderful. Every ending (last shows for the seniors) becomes a new beginning. Keep becoming better people.

- via Hwy 280
- Hwy 101 or
- a mixture of one of those highways plus either Foothill Expressway or El Camino Real.
There are other streets in between, but you should rely on whatever the mapping site or app gives you as the fastest least congested route.

Hello Dancers and Parents,

Here are some notes for this weekend. Tomorrow we will meet at Spangenberg Theater at Gunn High School, Palo Alto for a tech and full dress rehearsal. This rehearsal will focus on Cast 1 so plan for the roles you will perform in the Saturday afternoon show.

We are giving

4:00pm as Call Time to provide a window and allow for traffic, the need to get food and to come prepared. Dancers, parents and dressing room or backstage volunteers are welcome to arrive starting at 4:00pm, warm-up and start of the rehearsal will begin sometime between

5:00-5:30pm if everything goes to plan. The earlier we start the earlier we will be done so do your best to be ready to go and please plan accordingly. Expect to stay as late as

9:30pm tomorrow evening but we are hopeful that it will end sooner, and will update the site during rehearsal.

Here is a list of reminders for our rehearsal tomorrow, and performances on Sat. and Sun.

We will be at a new theater and therefore there are necessary changes that need to be made as far as dressing rooms and quick changes are concerned, please be patient and be respectful of backstage space it is much smaller. Dressing room volunteers and dancers not performing should not be in the backstage area unless assigned to be there. We are hopeful that we can keep all dancers in the backstage dressing rooms throughout the show as the space is larger than anticipated, but we will see how it goes tomorrow during rehearsal.
All items should be labeled with your name (curls-best to sew it on the inside, tights, leotards, jackets, shoes, blankets and anything else)
All dancers should come with hair in a tight, flat bun-no donuts, curls in, and make-up applied to dress rehearsal and all shows here is a video link https://youtu.be/1LC2aIzpvLg
Dancers need to be checked in and out of classroom area
Please bring some type of covering to go over pointe shoes-slides are a good choice for those not on pointe. The classroom that we are using as a dressing room/green room is a bit of a walk
Bring a large jacket or blanket to keep warm while traveling between classroom and stage area (label these items)
Older girls should bring a mirror for their make-up there is none in the classrooms
BOBBY PINS-Bring lots!!!! also extra tights, hairnets, gel, hairspray, hairbands and a brush. Lipstick and other make-up for touch ups
Bring a book, tablet, coloring items, snacks and water- nothing that’s messy or has lots of pieces - to keep you entertained during down time
Get ready for a fun and exciting (and long) weekend!

An Older Note from October

Now that we are in the costume fitting time, everyone needs to make sure they have the right accessories for their costume please note the following:

Fritz Friends... need black ballet shoes/or black jazz shoes.
Ensemble... needs dolls for the party scene... It is OPTIONAL to purchase your own doll. We have dolls you may borrow at the theater. You may purchase your own on eBay or Amazon at not too much expense as a memory of your special party. Some may be able to borrow some from middle and high school dancers who have moved onto other dance roles.
Party Children/Ensemble... need little curls that fit over your bun. You may purchase them at the Dance Theater Shop San Mateo or the costume shop in Redwood City.
Russian... dancers need character shoes. We have some... please check the bucket and make sure we have some that fit you. Please put your name on the inside.
All Dancers should have flesh color leotards.
All LOLLY POPS... must wear a black leotard under their costume.
Additional items you need to bring to the theater....
- Bobby Pins/hair nets/hair ties/brush or comb/hair spray/gel
- Make-up
- Sewing kit / safety pins
- Two pairs of tights [ I hope every dancer has 2 thighs. I have corrected the old typo. It is now 2 pairs of tights. ]
- Ballet shoes as needed for your parts.(Pink Flat/Pointe/Black )

Answers to Questions

The items in the list are to acquire for use at the theater (dress rehearsal and shows).
We have a bin of old dolls for ensemble dancers to use during the show. Buying your own doll for Ensemble is OPTIONAL. This is for your daughter, if she wants her own doll. rather than sharing one out of the bin. (Be sure to label personal dolls in some way in case they climb into the bin.) The dolls are Victorian type (plastic or porcelain), girls/young ladies dressed in a nice dress, and approximately a foot tall.
Personal items (make-up, bobby pins, curls, hair brushes ) are for personal hygiene.
Make-up for the youngest dancers is minimal (blush, lipstick, and eyeliner) for accentuating their faces for the audience to see from a distance.
The shoes for little ones in party child, mice, and soldier are the usual soft pink ballet shoes.
The dancer will need to wear a flesh colored leotard for Costume Fittings (if you have not purchased it by the time of Costume Fitting Day any leotard should be fine), Picture Day 12/17 (rescheduled) in the morning, and Dress Rehearsals, and Shows.

At this new Theater at Gunn High School the dressing rooms are extremely small, so we have rented the closest available classroom as a dressing room and resting room. However, close is still a decent walk in the hallways exposed to the cold of the night (hopefully not rain with wind). There are hallway covers to protect us from any rain for most of the way to/from the theater. Please be prepared with a large warm jacket to go over your child's costume and for yourself if you are volunteering backstage or in the dressing room. If it is raining and or windy, a large rain jacket would be even better.
If you have a flashlight, bring it because there may be some dark areas as we walk between the classroom and the theater. Most of the hallways are lit, but there are some areas between the hallways and the theater which are somewhat disconnected. The parking lot is rather dark.
Please bring a portable or hand held mirror for make-up and hair needs. The classroom will not have any.
Provide snacks and drinks to your dancer. Food can only be eaten in the classroom. Try not to make a mess. Please clean up after yourselves. Glenn Wong has been arranging some food donations from businesses, ie bagels.
There are new insurance requirements regarding volunteers for the safety of our children, which will be rolling out as soon as we have all of the required policies in place. Sorry of this late requirement.

5:38 pm - We've gone through a lot today but it's been a bit out of order. We just finished the Lollipops. Now we are going into Waltz of the Flowers. I still am guessing that we will run late, unless they cut it off exactly on time regardless of where we are.

Finale was done. Angels was done. I've been in and out taking care of props so I have not seen a lot of the scenes.

2:20 pm - I have a feeling that today we will be running late. After getting everybody dressed we are just about to get started with the Party Scene.

Sunday, November 24 - PYB Nutcracker Rehearsal

10 am - 12 noon - Robert will be moving all needed costumes and props down to the back of the Unit D warehouse to be more easily accessible to Studio E and F.

12:45 pm - available Dressing Room Moms arrive to prepare for a Partial Dress Rehearsal at ASB

1pm - rehearsal begins for everybody.

6 pm - End of rehearsal. This is what the schedule says, but if may run over if it is like past dress rehearsals.

Changing in and out of costumes takes more time, unless rapid quick changes of costumes are fully implemented.

After Show Cast Holiday Party

Sunday, 12/22, 3:10 pm to 5:50 pm [ 3 to 6 pm minus setup and cleanup ]. It will be at the Foster City Parks and Rec building (near Shell and Hillsdale). It will be a holiday party. I know it's right before Christmas. We are sorry to hear that some families will miss the party,because they are out of town for the holidays. No School Shows

Unfortunately we will not be able to present a school show this year. If you have school teachers familiar with our program asking about this year, please ask them to email us at excom@pyballet.org. We will respond with alternate suggestions for attending this year's performances.
It's expected to rain sporadically on Friday early afternoon and evening. It may be dry in Palo Alto between 3 and 9 pm (as of 10:30 am).
Please spread the news of our fabulous Nutcracker show and help sell tickets. Being compelled to move to a new location is difficult, plus we have lost the school shows. Thank you.

We need a laundry volunteer for the bloomers and other items.
There are laundry needs as well.
This year's Nutcracker is about one week later than normal due to all of the problems we had in acquiring a theater. This makes it impact many high school and middle school students whom have finals, papers, concerts, and other school activities that impact grades. Please prepare by studying for finals and writing final papers early. It may be a hard decision, but if there is a direct time conflict, I personally would decide on keeping an A in a class and missing the Friday dress rehearsal since there is a grade at stake. Grades follow you longer and high school grades will impact your college applications. This decision would be reversed, if dancing is your career aspiration. In the end it's your decision and all decisions have repercussions, good or bad.

Robert needs help getting all of the costumes and props to and from the theater.

Since we wont be at the theater until 12/13, move-in day has been changed to Wednesday 12/11 afternoon/evening:
- On Wednesday 12/11 if somebody could be ready to guide me as I back the 26' truck into the parking lot between 2:30 and 3 pm that will be helpful.
- Wednesday 12/11 afternoon 3-5:30pm at Unit D [driving to the theater] then continuing evening
- approximately 6:30-9 pm at the theater, Gunn High School in Palo Alto.
We will need an hour of help during the evening of Tuesday 12/10 to prepare for Wednesday.

The 2nd Costume Fittings to take care of many of the other dancers will be on Sunday 11/10.

We are looking for a volunteer to help with Program and Ads layout using InDesign.
The first Costume Fitting Day will be on Sunday 10/27, from 11 am and going a bit into the 2pm rehearsal time. We are starting with the Party Scene dancers.
WE NEED 2 DADs!! We are recruiting 2 more Dads to be in the Party Scene, Act 1, for the 3 shows. It does involve 2 minutes of a simple dance and being at part of the rehearsals starting later in November. It's a great way to spend some quality time with your young dancer. We still need 1 more Parent (Dad) or older teenager to act as a guest adult/father dressed in a Tux in the Entrance and Party Scene.

The latest info is that the teachers are asking for the older dancers to come to a special rehearsal on Saturday, 12/7. Stay tuned for more information.

We need 1 or 2 more Dad's or older teenagers (guy friends or family) to join the parents dance. We lost one Dad to an injury and we're uncertain about one professional.

The final slot schedule for the optional Picture Day is in the shared Google drive. Prepare your costumes and make-up well before your time slot.

Sunday, October 27th

There are some Costume fittings for Party Scene on Sunday before the rehearsal.
- 11:00 am - 11:45 am -- Ensemble

- 12:30 pm - 1:15 pm -- Little Clara and Clara Friends
- 1:15 pm - 1:45 pm -- Fritz and Fritz Friends
There are only 5 more rehearsals before Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving break we will be at the Theater.
For the remainder of the rehearsals, all dancers, including young ones, need to arrive at the beginning of their rehearsal and stay for the entire time until they are dismissed. Some dancers who are done with their roles may be able to be dismissed early, especially younger dancers. The teachers have discretion to reorder the parts in the rehearsal. It is now not recommended to leave and return during the rehearsal period. It is beyond our ability to predict the timing of the changes in the rehearsal.
Please bring snacks and drinks, at least a water container to refill.

The rehearsal schedule for this Sunday, October 27th is below (this is a chronological ordering of the schedule on the Drive).

We are rehearsing almost everything, except for some scenes of Party Children, Land of Sweets, and Sugar Plum Fairy.

Please arrive with enough time for you / your dancer(s) to be prepared to start exactly when you are needed by the teachers in the rehearsal. Please error on the side of being early rather than missing part of your rehearsal.

We are covering parts of Most of the scenes, except for the Snow scene.

Based on the scenes being rehearsed some of the youngest dancers may not be needed for rehearsal at all. However, you will be needed for next Sunday, 10/20, and for all following rehearsals. Know your parts.

In general rehearsals will be scheduled Sunday afternoon from 2 pm until 5 pm (and until 6pm in November). Know when your first role is needed. Be ready, dressed and have your dance shoes on for your rehearsal time. All dancers should warm up and stretch ahead of time to avoid injuries.

Changes in the schedule will happen occasionally, often based on instructional needs.

4:40 pm - The Battle scene looks like it is going to be on time.

4 pm - Rehearsal is continuing with the Battle scene

3:50 pm - By this time all the dancers who need to be here have checked in and are rehearsing.

3 pm - I hear Clara and the ensemble with their "dolls" having their party crashed by Fritz and friends

2:30 pm - At first the steps were being done without music. The music has started.

2 pm - The rehearsals has started with Clara and Fritz and friends.

2pm: Clara, Fritz, Clara's Friends, Fritz's Friends and Ensemble
3:30 pm: Party Children join rehearsal
4-5 pm: Battle Scene

In general rehearsals will be scheduled Sunday afternoon from 2 pm until 5 pm.

Until mid-October rehearsals are likely to focus on Act 1, Party Scene and Battle Scene and involve primarily younger cast members with some older soloists integral to those scenes. Variations in start times will not be significant.The changes in schedule between last week and this week are the type of changes that will occur to accommodate the need for more or less time to focus on different roles or scenes.

Sunday, September 22nd - PYB Nutcracker rehearsals

Welcome to new dancers and parents. When I'm here (hmmm, the majority of the time) I'll be reporting on the status of the rehearsals, i.e. when the rehearsal are running late or early or on time.

5:03 pm - ended a moment ago. Thank you all for a great rehearsal.

4:40 pm - They have been in battle for a while now. It looks like things are happening on time.

4:20 pm - The mice have circled around the stage. The nutcracker prince has appeared. The mice and the soldiers are about to enter into battle.

3:47 pm - They have been in battle scene. Ayako says things are going well.

3:35 pm - the rehearsal seems to be running a tad late. Battle scene should be on stage soon.

3 pm - Ensemble and Party Scene rehearsals have started.

2 pm - The rehearsals have started with Clara and Fritz and friends.

BTW we may be sending out the SignUpGenius link with all of the rehearsal times wrong since we do not have a finalized rehearsal schedule from the teachers yet. (We are still discussing it.)

The Sunday, 9/22/2019, rehearsal will start at

2 pm with Clara, Fritz, Clara's Friends and Fritz's Friends. Dancers in those roles should arrive to start rehearsing at 2:00 pm.

The Ensemble will begin rehearsing at approximately

3 pm and should arrive about 15 minutes ahead to be prepared to start on time.

Rehearsals for the Battle Scene will start at

3:30 and rehearsals are scheduled to end at

5:00 pm.

Party Children will not rehearse tomorrow, but your dancer should attend rehearsal if she/he is in another role indicated above.
